Fully-funded studentships are available.<\/p>\n<p>Magnetohydrodynamics is the study of magnetic fluids and gives a good description of the dynamics of the Sun\u2019s atmosphere. If you are looking for a Ph.D. that combines the areas of fluid mechanics, electromagnetism and astronomy, then perhaps a Ph.D. in Solar Physics is for you.<\/p>\n<p>Several potential projects are available, including mathematical modelling of solar phenomena, magnetic wave propagation in inhomogeneous media and the comparison of models with solar satellite data.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should be highly motivated and have a good Honours degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics or a related subject. The goal is to study the mechanism of growth of electrodeposited ternary alloys in the presence or absence of an applied magnetic field on the electrolytic cell and the structure and properties of the obtained alloys. The experimental study will analyze the effects of different parameters of electrodeposition process on the structures and properties of the deposits. Research activities concern the effect of magnetic fields on the ability of turbulent flows of electrically conducting fluids to transport heat and admixtures. The work is theoretical in nature albeit with potential implications for metallurgy and materials processing.<\/p>\n<p>The project will require development and application of advanced numerical algorithms for high-resolution simulation of MHD flows. The successful applicant will have good academic record and strong background in thermal and fluid sciences and mathematics. Experience in computational modeling and familiarity with numerical analysis of turbulent flows is desired.<\/p>\n<p>A successful applicant will enter one of the two Ph.D. programs:<br \/>\nAutomotive Systems Engineering or Information Systems Engineering, depending on his\/her personal background and aspirations.
