II – 2ND EUROMAGNET SUMMER SCHOOL “SCIENCE IN HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS”
————————————————-
(from Uli Zeitler, Netherlands)

The 2nd EuroMagNET summer school “Science in High Magnetic Fields”

to be held on the Dutch island of Ameland from 5 – 11 September 2010 to April 30, 2010.
The DEADLINE has been extended to APRIL 30, 2010.

The school is dedicated to recent advances in Science in High Magnetic Fields covering a wide range of areas such as semiconductor physics, low-dimensional materials and nano-scaled objects, strongly correlated electron systems, magnetism, superconductivity, molecular systems, high-magnetic-field technology and new high-field experimental techniques.

It provides a unique opportunity, in particular for young scientists, to become acquainted with all aspects of high field research in Europe and beyond, and to present own work to a dedicated audience.

You can find more information, including invited lecturers, topics and how-to-apply, on our website

http://www.hfml.science.ru.nl/euromagnet-ameland

Please also forward this information in to your collaborators and colleagues (especially PhD students and young scientists) who may be interested in participating.
Participation at the school is free of charge, the school costs will be covered by the EuroMagNET II programme.

Best regards

III – PHD IN SOLAR PHYSICS – NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY
————————————————-
(from James McLaughlin, UK)

PhD in Solar Physics – Northumbria University

Applications are invited to study for a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Northumbria University, in the areas of Solar Physics, Magnetohydrodynamics and Mathematical Modelling of Solar Phenomena. Fully-funded studentships are available.

Magnetohydrodynamics is the study of magnetic fluids and gives a good description of the dynamics of the Sun’s atmosphere. If you are looking for a Ph.D. that combines the areas of fluid mechanics, electromagnetism and astronomy, then perhaps a Ph.D. in Solar Physics is for you.

Several potential projects are available, including mathematical modelling of solar phenomena, magnetic wave propagation in inhomogeneous media and the comparison of models with solar satellite data.

Applicants should be highly motivated and have a good Honours degree in Applied Mathematics, Physics or a related subject. No prior knowledge of solar physics is required.

An advertisement (pdf format) can be found here – feel free to put a copy up in your respective institutions:

IV – CONVECTION, MAGNETOCONVECTION AND DYNAMO THEORY
————————————————-
(from David Hughes, Leeds, UK)

A workshop on Convection, Magnetoconvection and Dynamo Theory will be held in Cargese, Corsica from 20-25 September 2010. The meeting will provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate the 60th birthday of Michael Proctor.
Further details can be found at:

V – NEW CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: PHD SCHOLARSHIP AT REIMS UNIVERSITY (FRANCE)
————————————————-
(from Anne-Lise Daltin, Reims, France)

Starting from September 2010, the PhD will take 3 years.

Qualifications: – Master degree in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar
– strong background in electrochemistry or solid state chemistry

Two propositions are available:

Electrochemical synthesis of dilute magnetic-semiconductor (DMS). Influence of superimposition of magnetic field. The aim of the PhD project is to develop dilute magnetic semi-conductors (DMS) by metal-oxide co-electrodeposition. DMS have attracted considerable research efforts owing to the great potential for use in spintronics devices. Topics include: synthesis of doped-Cu2O and SnO2 materials by electrochemical deposition and, structural characterization of these materials, using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy associated with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.

Dr. Anne-Lise DALTIN, +33 326918449, e-mail: al.daltin(at)univ-reims.fr

Experimental and theoretical studies of the electrodeposition mechanism of Zn-Ni-X (X = Co, Fe) ternary alloys: modeling and structure-properties relation by multi-scale approach. The goal is to study the mechanism of growth of electrodeposited ternary alloys in the presence or absence of an applied magnetic field on the electrolytic cell and the structure and properties of the obtained alloys. The experimental study will analyze the effects of different parameters of electrodeposition process on the structures and properties of the deposits. Modeling of deposit growth will be achieved using the tools of quantum chemistry (eg DFT) and molecular dynamics techniques.

VI – PHD POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN – DEARBORN, USA
————————————————-
(from Oleg Zikanov, USA)

Numerical analysis of turbulence and transport in MHD flows PhD position at the University of Michigan – Dearborn, USA

A graduate assistantship is expected to become available at the College of Engineering and Computer Science of the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Research activities concern the effect of magnetic fields on the ability of turbulent flows of electrically conducting fluids to transport heat and admixtures. The work is theoretical in nature albeit with potential implications for metallurgy and materials processing.

The project will require development and application of advanced numerical algorithms for high-resolution simulation of MHD flows. The successful applicant will have good academic record and strong background in thermal and fluid sciences and mathematics. Experience in computational modeling and familiarity with numerical analysis of turbulent flows is desired.

A successful applicant will enter one of the two Ph.D. programs:
Automotive Systems Engineering or Information Systems Engineering, depending on his/her personal background and aspirations. The admission requires a completed M.S. degree or equivalent in engineering, computer science or a related area. Further information on admission and the programs is available at, respectively, http://www.engin.umd.umich.edu/IDP/phd_ase/index.php
http://www.engin.umd.umich.edu/IDP/phd_ise/admission.php.

The project will be supervised by Prof. Oleg Zikanov of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Michigan – Dearborn.

If interested, please send preliminary application by e-mail to zikanov(at)umich.edu. The materials must include a detailed resume, a summary of coursework and grades (a transcript), names and contact information of two references, and, if available and applicable, GRE and TOEFL scores.
