Full Time, Fixed Term 3 years

Coventry University has established a significant Research Centre in Flow Measurement and Fluid Mechanics. The Centre has been in existence for 18 months and has established a solid and active portfolio of projects with substantial external funding success from funders. The Centre focuses on the high value to be gained from linking the applied art of flow measurement with the fundamental science of fluid mechanics and most of our work involves experimental, computational and theoretical foundations.

As part of our research strategy the Centre is now looking for a talented research associate to join our team to support the delivery of a growing portfolio of research projects.  The post-holder will predominantly assist in the delivery of externally-funded research projects for a variety of UK and international organisations.

With experience in a research environment and a good understanding of research methods with strong experimental focus, you should have a good level of knowledge in fluid flow and flow instrumentation and an ability to apply this knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment. The post-holder must be comfortable working in a laboratory or industrial environment.

You must have a PhD or have equivalent professional experience in fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, applied physics or a similar discipline. Excellent critical analysis, project management, communication skills and well-developed interpersonal skills are essential, as is the ability to work effectively in a team and on your own initiative. Some of the projects will involve working away from Coventry, with the need to travel elsewhere in the UK and Europe for short periods.

The McLaren PhD internship programme in CFD and data analytics gives you an opportunity to work in a
unique & challenging environment of the motorsport aerodynamics department. As an intern in the
CFD methodology team, you will be involved in development/evaluation of CFD, big data analytics,
machine learning and neural networks techniques and tools to be used in the aerodynamic design
of the F1™ car.
Interns will also have an opportunity to work on projects providing CFD support to non-aero departments.
Working closely with the aerodynamicists, CFD R&D engineers and HPC systems engineers, you will have
an opportunity to learn practical aspects of motorsport aerodynamic design.
The internship is open to PhD students in engineering or computing science from the second year onwards
and this four month programme starts in January, May and September.

Research Associate – Flow Measurement and Fluid Mechanics Research Centre

Coventry University

Fixed Term for 23 months

An EPSRC-funded, postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at Coventry University working on the transition to turbulence in non-Newtonian shear flows. The successful applicant will work with Dr Chris Pringle with the aim of adapting already existing numerical tools from the Newtonian problem, and developing entirely new ones.

Experiments on shear thinning pipe flow have observed the development of asymmetry at moderate Reynolds numbers. Attempts to explain this and its role in transition have so far had limited success. This project will seek to apply fully nonlinear techniques to the problem including exact solution tracking and nonlinear optimisation methods similar to those used successfully for Newtonian flows.

The successful applicant should have: a PhD (or be about to submit one) in fluid dynamics, applied mathematics or a similar discipline; a strong background in mathematical and numerical modelling; and an ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Experience of the above nonlinear techniques is desirable. You should be able to communicate technical material to both academics and non-academics. You will be expected to integrate into the growing fluid dynamics group, within the Research Centre in Flow Measurement and Fluid Mechanics, participating in regular seminars and adding to the collegiate environment and you may be asked to help develop student research skills.
