I. MHD MINI-SYMPOSIUM AT THE BIFD-2017

(from Oleg Zikanov, USA)

There will be a session (or severals sessions) focused on MHD-related topics at the 7th International Symposium on Instabilities and Bifurcations in Fluid Dynamics (BIFD-2017), which will take place on July 11-14 2017 at the Woodlands Convention Center (a suburb of Houston, TX). The deadline for abstract submission deadline is February 1, 2017. For further details please see http://www.shsu.edu/bifd2017. The MHD community has always been strongly represented at the BIFD conferences, the tradition the organizers hope to maintain. Presentations concerning all sub-fields of MHD (liquid metal, plasma, industrial and astro- and geophysical applications, etc) are welcomed.

II. FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT: INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC FLOWS IN MODERATE AND HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS

(from Sergei Molokov, UK)

The workshop will take place at Coventry University (UK) on 29-30 June, 2017. One of the aims of the workshop is to encourage collaboration by scientists from different fields. There will be three sessions:

  1. Liquid Metal and Industrial MHD (organiser Prof Sergei Molokov, Coventry University, s.molokov(at)coventry.ac.uk)
  2. Geo- and Astro- Physics (organiser Prof David W Hughes, University of Leeds, D.W.Hughes(at)leeds.ac.uk)
  3. Magnetoelectrochemistry (organiser Dr Andrew Cobley, Coventry University, aa2266(at)coventry.ac.uk)

There will be a fee, which will cover the cost of two dinners. One of the dinners, on Friday, 30th will be the Medieval Banquet at the historical Coombe Abbey hotel (http://www.coombeabbey.com/mediaeval-banquets/) with performance by actors.

The second announcement, website address, and call for papers will appear in January, 2017. If you would like to get more information before then, please contact either organisers of the sessions, or the local organising team:

Local Organising committee:

  • Dr. Alex Pedcenko (a.pedcenko(at)coventry.ac.uk)
  • Dr. Svetlana Aleksandrova (s.aleksandrova(at)coventry.ac.uk)

17th MHD Days 2016

Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research

Nov 30 – Dec 2, 2016, Göttingen, Germany

————————————————————–

Scope and Goals

We are happy to invite you to participate in the 17th MHD Days hosted by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Göttingen. As in previous years, the meeting aims at bringing together researchers working on general issues of magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, and related experiments.

Theoretical, numerical, and observational results from the above-mentioned fields all belong to the scope of the meeting.

Important dates

15th of August: Registration and abstract submission opens

18th of October: Last day for special hotel reservation

1st of November: Abstract deadline

16th of November: Registration deadline

30th of November: Start of the meeting

Registration

A registration form and an abstract submission form will be available from the 15th of August on the website

https://mhd2016.sciencesconf.org

A registration fee of maximum 100 EUR will be collected to cover some expenses during the meeting, i.e., lunches, coffee, and conference dinner.

Schedule

We plan to start the meeting in the morning of Wednesday, November 30, and to finish on Friday, December 2, around noon. At the beginning of each day, there will be keynote talks on the solar dynamo, the role of turbulent effects in dynamo action, and global models of turbulent magneto-convection, followed by contributed talks. We also plan to reserve time to exchange as many news as possible. A detailed program will follow and be published on the website.

Keynote speakers: Maarit J. Käpylä, Karl-Heinz Rädler, Manfred Schüssler

Looking forward to seeing you in Göttingen!

Jörn Warnecke

  1. SCHEDULE OF CONFERENCES ON MHD AND RELATED TOPICS

Hydromag Prize

The HYDROMAG association for Hydromagnetic phenomena and its applications  (http://www.hydromag.eu) is pleased to announce the first Hydromag Best Poster Prize.

The prize consists of a personal gratification of 500€, awarded for the best poster presented at the  PAMIR conference (Cagliari, 20-24 June 2016). The competition was open to all researchers under 35  years of age, who are first author of a poster accepted for display during the conference. The winner was decided based on the originality, significance and rigour of the work presented. The decision  was made by the members of the HYDROMAG committee present at the PAMIR conference.

This edition of the prize was generously funded by Coventry University (UK) and was awarded to Ms Franziska Karnbach (Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, Dresden, Germany) for her poster “Influence of Magnetic Fields on the Behavior of Single Hydrogen Bubbles Generated via Water Electrolysis“.

We would like to make Hydromag Prize a tradition, presented at a key MHD-related conferences in the future.

Congratulations Franziska!
The HYDROMAG Committee

Lectureship in Magnetohydrodynamics / Solar Physics at the University of Dundee (UK)

The University of Dundee is seeking an exceptional candidate to join our Magnetohydrodynamics research group in Applied Mathematics, based within the School of Science and Engineering.

Mathematics at Dundee was ranked 8th (of 53) in the UK and 1st in Scotland in the national Research Excellence Framework assessment in 2014 – a major contributor to this success was the internationally-recognised research of the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) group. The MHD group carries out fundamental research into the structure and dynamics of magnetic fields and plasmas, using a combination of numerical simulations (HPC) and mathematical analysis based on dynamical systems theory, braid theory and differential geometry. The main areas of application are astrophysical plasmas, particularly solar plasmas. Group members also work on applications to laboratory plasmas and other fluid dynamical systems (for more details see http://www.maths.dundee.ac.uk/mhd/ ).

The successful candidate will be expected to perform internationally leading research in an area that complements that of the MHD group. We interpret the research area in its broadest sense and welcome applications in all areas of theory, modelling and observations of plasmas and fluids. The successful candidate should also have a commitment to excellence in teaching. Mathematics as a discipline has been placed in the top 10 in the UK in all major subject league tables in 2016, and offers a range of undergraduate and MSc degrees.

The School holds Athena Swan Bronze Awards in all of its discipline areas, recognising its commitment and success in developing practices to support the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia.

For a full job description and details of how to apply, see http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AUC547/lecturer-in-applied-mathematics-teaching-and-research/

Appointment will be at grade 7 – 8 Lecturer (£34,576 – £46,414)

Closing Date: 6 March 2016

Informal inquires may be made to Prof Gunnar Hornig g.hornig@dundee.ac.uk  or Dr David Pontin d.i.pontin@dundee.ac.uk
