October 15-18, 2013: 549th Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-Seminar on Liquid Metal MHD (Ilmenau, Germany)

in Bad Honnef, October 15-18, 2013.

Registration via www.tu-ilmenau.de/mhd/registration by August 31, 2013

The seminar is intended to bring together scientists with experience or collaborations in the field of experimental and theoretical magnetohydrodynamics, with a strong focus on works related to liquid metals. In particular, the seminar is divided into three overall topics:
The first two days are dedicated to rather fundamental aspects of MHD, namely geophysical MHD and MHD turbulence. The third day is devoted to applied MHD.

The program consists of 12 invited overview talks. After each talk is plenty of time for discussions. In addition, there will be a session dedicated to short presentations of young scientists and a poster session. Therefore, we particularly encourage young scientists to apply for the seminar.

The number of participants is limited. Accommodation and meals will be provided in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef for all participants free of charge thanks to the generous funding by the Wilhelm und Else Heraeus Foundation.

More information on the seminar can be found on www.tu-ilmenau.de/mhd

Hoping to see you at the seminar,

Christiane Heinicke, Thomas Wondrak, Gunter Gerbeth, André Thess

July 22-27, 2013 — Workshop on 'Mathematical Aspects of Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics'

Dear all,
We would like to advertise a Workshop on ‘Mathematical Aspects of Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics’, taking place in Cargese, Corsica, July 22-27 2013, to celebrate the many contributions of Andrew Soward to this field:

http://mhd.ens.fr/AMS70.

Please note that the number of participants is limited by the venue, and that the ‘early bird’ registration fee of GBP 350 (covering participation, accommodation, breakfasts, lunches and workshop events) is available only until April 30, 2103; after that date, the
registration fee will be GBP 400.

Limited funds are available to support participants who could not otherwise attend the meeting, offering reduced fees. These funds are intended principally for young scientists (PhD students and post-docs).

Please contact the organisers directly by email to enquire about this
possibility.

Registration is already open, and full registration requires three steps:

– pre-registration, recording your application to attend with the venue (the Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargese);
– registration, recording your arrival times, etc., for local transportation;
– payment.

Please follow the links at http://mhd.ens.fr/AMS70/registration.html and http://mhd.ens.fr/AMS70/payment.html , where further information is available.

We hope you will be able to join us in Cargese. If you have any queries, please just contact one of the organisers directly.

Best wishes,
Emmanuel Dormy, Andrew Gilbert, Graeme Sarson

23 – 24 May, 2013 UK MHD 2013 Meeting in Glasgow

The 2013 UK MHD Meeting will take place in GLASGOW on 23-24 May 2013.

March 18-19 2013: Cosmic magnetic fields: mathematical and observational descriptions (Newcastle University)

March 18-19 2013, Newcastle University

http://www.mas.ncl.ac.uk/as60/

We’re organising a short meeting to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Anvar Shukurov.  Anvar Shukurov moved to Newcastle University in 1996 and is an internationally recognised authority on astrophysical magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) and dynamo theory.  He has collaborated with many mathematicians, physicists and astronomers from around the world, many of whom will be attending this event.

The meeting will therefore bring together applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists working on astrophysical magneto-hydrodynamics and dynamo theory, and radio astronomers working on the observation of magnetic fields and turbulence.  The event is particularly timely as a significant worldwide expansion in radio astronomy is currently underway, driven in part by the topic of cosmic magnetic fields, which requires new mathematical models and methods for the planning and interpretation of observations.

The meeting website is at www.mas.ncl.ac.uk/as60/ , and registration is open.  We hope that many from the UK MHD community will be able to attend, and look forward to seeing you in Newcastle next year.

Best wishes, Andrew Fletcher, Graeme Sarson ( magnetic.fields(at)ncl.ac.uk )
