I - POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE POSITION AT COVENTRY UNIVERSITY

-----------------------------------------------
(from A. Potherat, Coventry, UK)

Postdoctoral Research Associate
Coventry University

Computational Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)

Applications are invited for a research position in computational fluid mechanics. The project consists of investigating the properties of wall bounded turbulent flows under the influence of a strong magnetic field. The Research Associate will be in charge of implementing a new type of spectral methods that uses bases of functions that are tailored to the flow. He/she will then use the code to simulate experimental configurations where chaotic or turbulent flows were observed (more info on this technique can be found in Dymkou & Potherat J. Theor. Comp. Fluid. Dyn. 23 (6) 2009, and Potherat & Dymkou, J. Fluid Mech 655, 2010) .

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in the field of fluid mechanics or applied mathematics and have an excellent research track record, evidenced by publications in leading peer reviewed journals such as J. Fluid Mech, Phys Rev or equivalent. A very good understanding of fluid mechanics, solid programming abilities and a basic knowledge of functional analysis are essential. Prior knowledge of MHD will be appreciated but isn't a requirement.

The Magnetohydrodynamics group at Coventry is internationally established as leading in the field of liquid metal magnetohydrodynamics. It covers theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects of both fundamental and applied problems. The group benefits from extensive experimental and computational resources, that are unique in the UK.

II - FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF 11TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON THE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PLASMA EXPERIMENTS IN LABORATORY AND SPACE (IPELS)

-----------------------------------------------
(from Hantao Ji, Princeton, USA)

We are delighted to announce that the eleventh International Workshop on the Interrelationship between Plasma Experiments in Laboratory and Space (IPELS) will be held from the evening of July 10 to the afternoon of July 15, 2011 at The Westin Resort & Spa (http://www.westinwhistler.com) in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. As a 20-year old tradition, we aim to bring together active members of the laboratory, space and astrophysics plasma physics communities from around the world and we also aim to foster intellectual interaction and scientific collaboration addressing the processes responsible for various common plasma phenomena.

The following is a list of topics to be covered:

         Collisionless shock and particle acceleration

Magnetic dynamo and angular momentum transport

         Reconnection and explosive phenomena

         Plasma waves and wave-particle interactions

         Instabilities and turbulence

Physics of dusty plasmas and sheaths

         Jets and winds.

There will be both oral sessions (consisting of tutorial and invited talks) and poster sessions. Interested parties should contact the organizers or members of the Scientific Organizing Committee listed below:

         Hantao Ji (PPPL, Chair)

         Riccardo Betti (U. Rochester, PPPL)

         Robert Bingham (RAL, U. Strathclyde)
