I - EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY AT ILMENAU UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

The Research Training Group (RTG) on Lorentz Force Velocimetry and Lorentz Force Eddy Current Testing at Ilmenau University of Technology offers the following open positions:
3 full-time postdoctoral positions
The positions start 01 January, 2012. In exceptional cases the candidate can be appointed slightly earlier or later. The research positions have a duration of two years and are paid according to the TVL E13 scale of the German public sector.
The measurement of flow velocities in hot and aggressive liquids like metal melts and molten glass is one of the grand challenges of industrial fluid mechanics. A physically closely related challenge is the detection of deeply lying flaws and inhomogeneities in electrically conducting solid materials. Since 2004, scientists and engineers at Ilmenau University of Technology have been developing two novel technologies termed Lorentz force velocimetry and Lorentz force eddy current testing to meet these challenges. Both technologies are based on measuring the Lorentz forces that are induced by the interaction of electrically conducting moving substances and magnetic fields.
The RTG is sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG. Within the RTG, the basic physics of these technologies shall be explored by performing high-precision model experiments, high-resolution numerical simulations, and intense analytical modeling. The RTG provides a creative and inspiring environment, excellent laboratory facilities, state-of-the-art scientific computing facilities, and the possibility of collaborating with industry and with foreign institutions. Successful candidates for the research positions should have
• an excellent doctoral degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics,
• an excellent knowledge of the English language,
• a high motivation for interdisciplinary work in an international scientific team.
The topics of the three positions are
1. Theoretical Magnetohydrodynamics
2. Force Measurement Technology
3. Computational Engineering.

Dear Recipients of the HYDROMAG Newsletter,
As you probably know, the 23rd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM2012) will be held in Beijing, China in August 2012. As usual, the Congress Committee has chosen a wide range of topics, covering the entire field of Mechanics, to be the subjects of PreNominated Sessions (PNS). We have been asked to co-chair the PNS Magnetohydrodynamics, and it is thus our pleasant duty to encourage acknowledged experts in this field to contribute to the Congress.
Accordingly, we write to encourage you to submit a paper, to be presented in either a Lecture Session (occupying a 20-minute slot, including discussion) or a Seminar Presentation Session (a 5-minute presentation slot plus the opportunity to display a poster). Your submission, prepared according to the instructions given on the website www.ictam2012.org should reach the Congress Office no later than
9 January 2012
We shall inform the organizers that we have encouraged you to submit a contribution to our PNS. You should be aware, however, that the final decision on whether a paper is accepted rests with the International Papers Committee (IPC) of IUTAM. They will meet in March 2012 to make their decisions on which papers should be accepted. We will provide input to the IPC concerning all papers submitted to our PNS but the final decision rests with them.
We very much hope that you will indeed submit a paper to the Congress, so that the PNS Magnetohydrodynamics can truly represent the state of the art in this field.

Starting from September 2011, the PhD will take 3 years.
Qualifications: - Master degree in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar - strong background in electrochemistry or solid state chemistry.
Electrochemical synthesis of dilute magnetic-semiconductor (DMS). Influence of superimposition of magnetic field. The aim of the PhD project is to develop dilute magnetic semi-conductors (DMS) by metal-oxide co-electrodeposition. DMS have attracted considerable research efforts owing to the great potential for use in spintronics devices. Topics include: synthesis of doped-Cu2O and SnO2 materials by electrochemical deposition and, structural characterization of these materials, using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy associated with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.

Starting from September 2011, the Postdoc will take 1 year.

- strong background in electrochemistry or solid state chemistry
In the frame of an international cooperation with the Shenyang University (China). The objectives are to develop process under high magnetic field for electrodeposition of magnetic materials with two principal goals: The first one is to get some nanocrystalline magnetic alloys and oxides by process under high magnetic field which can be pratically used in industrial process for their high performance as thin layer or permanent magnets. During the experiment, high magnetic field is an in situ method for the control of electrodeposition process. The obtained material is then annealing or oxidized after elaboration under HMF. The particular interest of this project is the finding that the magnetic properties (including coercive force, saturation magnetization, magnetic anisotropy…) of nanocrystalline Co-based alloys and oxide are improved by imposition of HMF during elaboration process. The originality and novelty of the project is that the functionality of materials could then be improved by both processes under HMF: electrodeposition and physical-chemical treatments.
