The deadline for applications is November 15, 2011. Appointments are for two years starting September 1, 2012 or some other date to be agreed upon. The fellowships are intended for scientists who have a recent PhD, completed less than 5 years before the starting date of the fellowship, and wish to carry out research in fields represented at NORDITA. Candidates working in other areas will be considered when it is scientifically justified. NORDITA was founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, but was relocated to the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm in January 2007 where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Research at NORDITA covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics and astrobiology, atomic physics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation and cosmology, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and statistical physics. The astrophysics group is headed by Axel Brandenburg who is mainly working on magnetohydrodynamic turbulence with applications to solar physics. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by NORDITA Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about NORDITA can be found at http://www.nordita.org. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2011. Only online applications will be accepted. The application procedure is posted on http://apps.nordita.org. ******************************************************************** II - POSTDOC POSITION AT TU ILMENAU ----------------------------------------------- (from Christian Karcher, Ilmenau, Germany) The Research Training Group (RTG) on Lorentz Force Velocimetry and Lorentz Force Eddy Current Testing at Ilmenau University of Technology offers 1 full-time postdoctoral position in theoretical and computational magnetohydrodynamics. The position starts 01 January, 2012 or as soon as possible. The position lasts two years, can be extended, and is paid according to TVL E14 scale (approximately 40.000 – 45.000 EUR per year before tax). The measurement of flow velocities in hot and aggressive liquids like metal melts and molten glass is a grand challenge of industrial fluid mechanics. A physically closely related challenge is the detection of deeply lying flaws and inhomogeneities in electrically conducting solid materials. Since 2004, scientists at Ilmenau University of Technology have been developing two novel technologies termed Lorentz force velocimetry and Lorentz force eddy current testing to meet these challenges. Both technologies are based on measuring the Lorentz forces that are induced by the interaction of electrically conducting moving substances and magnetic fields. The RTG is sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG. Within the RTG, the basic physics of these technologies shall be explored by performing high-precision model experiments, high-resolution numerical simulations, and intense analytical modeling. The RTG provides a creative and inspiring environment, excellent laboratory facilities, state-of-the-art scientific computing facilities, and the possibility of collaborating with industry and with foreign institutions. Further details can be found at www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force. Successful candidates for the postdoctoral position should have • an excellent doctoral degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics, • an excellent knowledge of the English language, • a high motivation for interdisciplinary work in an international scientific team, • a strong scientific background in mathematical and numerical modeling of multi-physics problems, • experience in theoretical and computational magnetohydrodynamics Ilmenau University of Technology aims to establish gender equality and highly encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with identical qualification will be considered with priority. Special services are available concerning social matters. Applicants should e-mail the complete set of documents in PDF format (see www.tu-ilmenau.de/lorentz-force) as soon as possible to lorentz-force(at)tu-ilmenau.de. Preliminary information can be obtained from the Head of the RTG, Professor André Thess (thess(at)tu-ilmenau.de) or the Scientific Coordinator of the RTG, Dr. Christian Karcher (christian.karcher(at)tu-ilmenau.de). ******************************************************************** III - SCHEDULE OF CONFERENCES ON MHD AND RELATED TOPICS ------------------------------------------------- March 11 - 15, 2012, TMS2012, CFD Modeling and Simulation in Materials Processin Orlando, Florida, USA http://www.programmaster.org/TMS2012 August 19 - 24, 2012, MHD at the 23rd International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM2012) Beijing, China http://www.ictam2012.org October 22 - 26, 2012 7th International Conference on Electromagnetic Processing of Materials (EPM2012) Beijing, China http://www.epm2012.cn ***************************************************************** IV - NEXT HYDROMAG NEWSLETTER ------------------------ will be issued by the end of January, 2012.
