    PhD Studentship: 2014-2016

    (PGRO Ref. VCS-ACH-12-14_2)

    University of Greenwich, UK

Title: “Contactless acoustic wave generation in a melt by electromagnetic induction”

A new electromagnetic induction technique is being developed to produce ultrasonic vibration in liquid metal for grain refinement and nano-particle dispersion in metal matrix composites. The PhD student will assist in the development, testing and validation of the software to simulate the electromagnetic, induced sound and velocity fields. The student will have the opportunity to examine the feasibility of these concepts, supported by experiments performed by partners on the large scale EU project EXOMET (FP7-NMP3-LA-2012-280421). Knowledge in fluid dynamics, electrodynamics and programming skills (FORTRAN, Matlab) are required.

For further information please contact the supervisors: Prof Koulis Pericleous,, or Dr Valdis Bojarevics, v.bojarevics(at)

For additional information about the studentship and links to the application form please go to:

The application form should be completed and returned to: postgraduateresearch(at) and include: a comprehensive CV and a one page covering letter explaining your interest in the project and how it relates to past experience and present motivations. Attachments should be in PDF format.

The closing date for applications is Noon 31st October 2014

  3. Associate Research Physicist Position at Princeton PPL, UK
  4. —————————–
    (from Hantao Ji, USA)

The Princeton Department of Astrophysical Sciences and Plasma Physics Laboratory seek to fill an associate research physicist position. Under supervision by senior personnel, the researcher will perform campaigns with the liquid-metal MagnetoRotational Instability experiment to investigate mechanisms for fast angular momentum transport, and also the nonlinear physics of Rossby waves and zonal flows. Candidates must have an extensive background in experimental physics, preferably fluid dynamics, liquid-metal MHD or plasma physics. The major responsibilities include handling liquid gallium in the laboratory; designing and implementing diagnostics; performing experiments; analyzing data; and interpreting, presenting and publishing results jointly with other researchers. Coordination with other technical, engineering and administrative personnel will also be essential.

A Ph.D. is required, with preference given to the disciplines listed above. Appointments will begin as soon as feasible.

Interested persons should submit a curriculum vita, bibliography, a statement of research interests, and provide contact information for three references. Applicants must apply via the web at: (Requisition Number: 1400263). Letters of recommendation will also be handled through this site. For further inquiries, contact jeremy(at) or hji(at) This position is subject to the University’s background check policy.

Princeton University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

  7. International workshop on measuring techniques for liquid metal flows (MTLM2015)
  8. —————————–
    (from Sven Eckert, Germany)

    Dear ladies and gentlemen,

we would like to announce the third international workshop on
measuring techniques for liquid metal flows (MTLM2015) in
    Dresden, April 15-17, 2015.

The goal of the workshop is to assess the state-of-the-art in the field of measuring techniques for liquid metal flows, to identify the demand and requirements arising from various applications, to share knowledge with students and engineers recently involved in the respective fields, to stimulate the discussion between the involved teams, and to trigger new innovative developments or co-operations. We want to bring together developers of different kinds of flow diagnostics and potential users from industry, research institutes and universities.

    Important dates:

    • Submission of abstracts: December 20, 2014
    • Notification of acceptance: January 20, 2015
    • Preliminary programme: February 01, 2015
    • Registration opens: February 01, 2015

  9. NORDITA FELLOWSHIPS 2015 – 2017
  10. —————————–
    (from Axel Brandenburg, Sweeden)

Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications for post-doctoral fellowships in theoretical physics. The deadline for applications is November 14, 2014. Appointments are for two years starting September 1, 2015 or some other date to be agreed upon. The fellowships are intended for
scientists who have a recent PhD, completed less than 5 years before the starting date of the fellowship, and wish to carry out research in fields represented at Nordita. Candidates working in other areas will be considered when it is scientifically justified.

Nordita is located at the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm, where it is jointly hosted by Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Research at Nordita covers a wide range of modern theoretical physics including astrophysics and astrobiology, atomic physics, biological physics, condensed matter physics, gravitation and cosmology, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and statistical physics. The research activity of the local academic staff is supplemented by Nordita Scientific Programs, which bring together groups of leading experts to work on specific topics for extended periods. There is also ample opportunity for collaboration with faculty and research staff at local universities. Further information about Nordita can be found at

    Application deadline: December 1, 2014.

Only online applications will be accepted. The application procedure
    is posted on

  11. 15th MHD Days 2014

    (from Rainer Arlt, Germany)

    15th MHD Days 2014

    Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics

    Potsdam December 2-3, 2014

    Scope and Goals

The meeting intends to bring together astrophysical problems with magnetic fields, general issues of magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics and liquid-metal developments. The conference focus is on theoretical studies including simulations but is open to observational and experimental results from the fields mentioned. This year the MHD Days will take place at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam.

It’s the 15th in a series of meetings which will be specially held in honour of Prof. Guenther Ruediger who initiated the MHD Days and whose 70th birthday will take place in late 2014.

A registration form including a suggestion for your talk title is available at the website

We plan to start in the morning of Tuesday, December 2, with a few key note talks on dynamos, instabilities and differential rotation and continue in the afternoon with contributed talks.
We will continue with contributed talks on Wednesday, Dec 3, to exchange as many news as possible.

    With best regards,

    Rainer Arlt
