I - INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEXT PAMIR CONFERENCE, PAMIR 2011 AND GAMAS SUMMER SCHOOL ON MAGNETO SCIENCES AND LIQUID METAL TECHNOLOGY

PAMIR 2011

The next pamir conference will be organised in Corsica September 5 to 9, 2011. This event corresponds to the Twentieth anniversary of this manifestation that was organised for the first time September 1991 at the Cadarache castle the guest host of the CEA.

The next edition will be placed under the hospice of the European group GAMAS (Group for the applications of Magneto sciences) created at the initiative of the CNRS, and will benefit also of the implication of the CEA renewing with the CNRS-CEA partnership as in the first edition.

The organisation will tack advantage as organisers of the two laboratories namely IPUL (Institute of physics of the university of Latvia) and LACMDTI (Laboratoire d’Analyse des Contraintes Mecaniques et Dynamique des Transferts aux Interfaces) of the Reims University.

Main of the information about the conference, including the topics, is given on the announcement of the event here after. Some views of the conference centre at the border of the Mediterranean Sea can be found on the web site of the conference:

GAMAS summer school

Additionally the conference will host a summer school organised by the European group of research GAMAS, devoted to magneto sciences and liquid metal technology. The teachers will be mainly members of the GAMAS Group. PhD students, post docs as well as engineers from private companies will be welcomed as auditors of this school.

The courses will be delivered in the form of seminar of one to two hours and will takes place only in the morning (September 5 to 9). That will permit to the school auditors to participate also at the conference itself, each afternoon, and to take part at the poster sessions planed on Tuesday September 6 and Thursday September 8 afternoons.

II - RESEARCH POSITIONS, EARTH AND PLANETARY MAGNETISM, ETH

The Earth and Planetary Magnetism Group at ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) has two openings for postdoctoral research scientists with an interest in the magnetic field, and the dynamics and physical conditions of the deep Earth.

1. Understanding convection and magnetic field generation in the Earth and planets. This position is for a scientist with an interest in studying the magnetic field of the Earth through numerical simulation, or of convection and magnetic field generation in the planets. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in parallel computing. Access is available to world-class computational resources, such as the massively-parallel Cray XT5 at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre cscs.ch

2. Experimental fluid dynamics. A researcher is sought with experience in experimental fluid dynamics and/or magnetohydrodynamics. The incumbent will have the use of a new laboratory for rotating fluid dynamics with the possibility of conducting both non-conducting and electrically conducting experiments. Candidates with interest in convection, libration, precession, and the general physics of MHD flows, are encouraged to apply.

The new researchers will be expected to: (i) conduct their own research (ii) co-supervise undergraduate- and graduate-level thesis projects. The working language of the Institute is English. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must have been awarded a doctoral degree. The appointments will be initially for one year with the possibility of renewal. III - JUNIOR RESEARCH POSITION IN EXPERIMENTAL MHD AT THE FUSION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER AT UCLA, USA

A research position at a junior level (e.g. a postdoc or development engineer) will be open soon at the Fusion Science and Technology Center at UCLA. The research is planned around complex geometry MHD flows relevant to a liquid metal blanket of a fusion power-reactor. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in mechanical or chemical engineering and have some experience in experimental studies with liquid metals. IV - 1 PhD AND 2 SCIENTIST POSITIONS at MHD DEPARTMENT OF FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM DRESDEN-ROSSENDORF (FZD)

FZD invites applications for 1 PhD and 2 scientist positions at the Department of Magnetohydrodynamics. All positions belong to the DRESDYN project at FZD (Dresden sodium facility for dynamo and thermohydraulic studies). DRESDYN will comprise a large scale precession dynamo experiment, a cylindrical experiment for the combined study of the Magnetorotational instability (MRI) and the Tayler instability (TI), as well as several thermohydraulic studies and measurement developments for sodium flows in fast reactors.

For the PhD position (refer to Reg.-No. 37-2010) we are looking for a student with profound knowledge of fluid mechanics and excellent experimental skills. The position is devoted to perform water pre-experiments at a medium-size precession experiment and to participate in the design of the large-scale precession experiment with liquid sodium. Prior knowledge of ultrasonic flow measurements, liquid sodium experiments, or precession driven flows is welcome but not required. The salary will be in the range of Euro 30000 – Euro 35000 per annum according to German public service scale.

The first scientist position (refer to Reg.-No. 38-2010) is devoted to the design and the realization of the large-scale liquid sodium experiments, including the precession driven dynamo experiment, the MRI/TI experiment, and experiments on safety aspects of fast breeder reactors. In parallel, experimental studies shall be realized at an available sodium facility covering problems such as the detection of gas bubbles in sodium flows or the design and installation of a new type of heat exchanger. Profound knowledge of fluid mechanics and excellent experimental skills are required. Expertise in liquid sodium technology is welcome.

The second scientist position (refer to Reg.-No. 39-2010) is devoted to numerical studies of precession driven dynamos and of the Magnetorotational and Tayler instability, with strong focus on the optimal design and better understanding of the experiments to be realized in the framework of DRESDYN. Profound knowledge of fluid mechanics and excellent numerical skills are required.

The salary for the two scientist positions will be in the range of Euro 44000 – Euro 48000 per annum according to German public service scale.

The initial appointment for all three positions will be for 3 years. A prolongation will be possible as DRESDYN is scheduled, at least, until 2016.

V - JOB OPPORTUNITY AND MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT AT NORDIC INSTITUTE FOR THEORETICAL PHYSICS (NORDITA), SWEDEN

In connection with a 5-year project on Astrophysical Dynamos (http://www.nordita.org/~brandenb/AstroDyn), there is a vacancy for a 2-year post-doc position at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (Nordita, http://www.nordita.org) in Stockholm.  The project is supported through an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council(http://erc.europa.eu/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.display&topicID=66) to improve our understanding of astrophysical dynamos. In addition, there are also regular Nordita post-doc fellowships.

Eligible for the post-doc positions are applicants with a PhD completed not earlier than five years before the application deadline. The position is supported by a post-doc stipend for a period of 2 years and will start on September 1, 2011, or some other date to be agreed upon. The applications should include a curriculum vitae together with a list of publications, 2 letters of recommendation, as well as a research plan. RädlerFest: α effect and beyond

The alpha effect is a prototype of non-diffusive turbulent transport phenomena that play important roles in understanding the formation of ordered magnetic fields from turbulent and chaotic motions. Examples include the large-scale magnetic field of the Sun, its 11 year cycle, as well as similar phenomena in other stars, accretion disks, and galaxies. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss recent progress and to highlight outstanding problems, clarify controversies, and to identify future possibilities for making progress. In this spirit, there will be ample opportunity for formal and informal discussions, in addition to contributed and invited talks. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to celebrate Karl-Heinz Rädler's 75th birthday (http://www.aip.de/People/khraedler).

The goal of WOPA is to articulate a unified, comprehensive set of major questions and research opportunities in the broad areas of plasma astrophysics. Ten major questions were generated by this community activity. The report is available at

"DYNAMICS AND TURBULENT TRANSPORT IN PLASMAS AND CONDUCTING FLUIDS"

to be held at Ecole de Physique des Houches (France) February 28-March 11, 2011.

This workshop will address the recent scientific progress and open issues in turbulent transport and dynamics in laboratory and space plasmas and conducting fluids.
The meeting will specifically deal with various aspects of turbulence in magnetized flows, from theoretical, numerical and experimental points of view.

The lectures will include fundamental subjects such as standard MHD, as well as its relevant revisions like inclusion of compressibility, two-fluid and some basic kinetic effects. In addition, lectures on basic theory of turbulence for fusion plasmas, as well as an introduction to gyrokinetic theory and gyrokinetic simulations will be administered. Systems addressed will range from flow-driven and weakly magnetized (eg. dynamos  and most astrophysical plasmas) to pressure and current driven turbulence in magnetically confined plasmas (relevant to fusion devices and basic plasma experiments as well as astrophysical plasmas). Various phenomena such as intermittency, reconnection, fluctuation driven flows and currents, weak wave turbulence dynamics, as well as wave particle interactions that are common to these different systems will be the main focus of this workshop.
