18-09-2017: EUROMECH Colloquium No.591

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to the Euromech colloquium
n° 591 entitled “Three-dimensional instability mechanisms in transitional and turbulent flows“,
organized by Stefania Cherubini and myself, to be held on 18-20 September 2017 in
the sunny medieval city of Bari, Italy.

The objective of this conference is to provide an international forum for discussing
the latest developments in instability and coherent structures
computations for both transitional and fully turbulent flows.

The colloquium will bring together researchers studying the rise and
development of instability mechanisms leading to three-dimensional flow structures in
different shear flows, with the aim of trying to find some common features between
the structures triggering or sustaining turbulence in such different cases.
The deep knowledge of exact coherent structures in parallel flows, as well as
the recent possibility of performing instability analysis on complex three-dimensional
or fully turbulent flows begin to make possible the achievement of such an ambitious goal.

Main topics are:
—————-
– Global instabilities
– Turbulence dynamics
– Receptivity, sensitivity
– Transition to turbulence
– Coherent structures
– Bifurcations and continuation methods

Important dates are:
——————–
– 31 May 2017  : deadline for submission of a one-page abstract
– 31 June 2017 : deadline for notification of acceptance
– 15 July 2017 : deadline for registration and payment of conference fee

Abstracts of one page (including texts and figures) should be sent to:
Jean-Christophe.Robinet@ensam.eu

Invited Plenary Speakers:
————————-
– Dwight BARKLEY, Warwick University, Warwick, UK
– Luca BRANDT, KTH Mechanics, Stockholm, Sweden
– Denis SIPP, ONERA, Meudon, France

For more details (deadline, topics and fees) you can visit the website:
http://591.euromech.org/ and download the flyer  in the attached fileeuromech_flyer

We hope to see you next September in Bari!

Sincerely,
Jean-Christophe ROBINET and Stefania CHERUBINI

I. MHD MINI-SYMPOSIUM AT THE BIFD-2017

(from Oleg Zikanov, USA)

There will be a session (or severals sessions) focused on MHD-related topics at the 7th International Symposium on Instabilities and Bifurcations in Fluid Dynamics (BIFD-2017), which will take place on July 11-14 2017 at the Woodlands Convention Center (a suburb of Houston, TX). The deadline for abstract submission deadline is February 1, 2017. For further details please see http://www.shsu.edu/bifd2017. The MHD community has always been strongly represented at the BIFD conferences, the tradition the organizers hope to maintain. Presentations concerning all sub-fields of MHD (liquid metal, plasma, industrial and astro- and geophysical applications, etc) are welcomed.

II. FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT: INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC FLOWS IN MODERATE AND HIGH MAGNETIC FIELDS

(from Sergei Molokov, UK)

The workshop will take place at Coventry University (UK) on 29-30 June, 2017. One of the aims of the workshop is to encourage collaboration by scientists from different fields. There will be three sessions:

  1. Liquid Metal and Industrial MHD (organiser Prof Sergei Molokov, Coventry University, s.molokov(at)coventry.ac.uk)
  2. Geo- and Astro- Physics (organiser Prof David W Hughes, University of Leeds, D.W.Hughes(at)leeds.ac.uk)
  3. Magnetoelectrochemistry (organiser Dr Andrew Cobley, Coventry University, aa2266(at)coventry.ac.uk)

There will be a fee, which will cover the cost of two dinners. One of the dinners, on Friday, 30th will be the Medieval Banquet at the historical Coombe Abbey hotel (http://www.coombeabbey.com/mediaeval-banquets/) with performance by actors.

The second announcement, website address, and call for papers will appear in January, 2017. If you would like to get more information before then, please contact either organisers of the sessions, or the local organising team:

Local Organising committee:

  • Dr. Alex Pedcenko (a.pedcenko(at)coventry.ac.uk)
  • Dr. Svetlana Aleksandrova (s.aleksandrova(at)coventry.ac.uk)
  • Prof. Sergei Molokov (s.molokov(at)coventry.ac.uk)
